CHARACTERISTICS OF ORGANIC COMPOUNDS

we have so many characteristics of organic compounds,such as;
1. Organic compounds are mostly covalent, they are stable because of the strong carbon bonds, say they have a covalent nature, they do not ionize in solution and are non conductors of electricity

2. Most organic compounds are non-polar, unless the compounds consist of very electronegative elements like chlorine or the hydroxyl group.Non-polar Substances are held together only by weak intermolecular forces such as the van-der-waals forces.

3. Organic compounds are generally soluble in non polar solvents like benzene or ether

4. Organic compounds generally have low melting and boiling points compared to inorganic compound.why? This is because these compounds possess relatively weak intermolecular bonds which can be easily broken by heat energy.

5. They are generally insoluble in water except in cases where the compound contains the hydroxyl group (-OH) in which case the -OH group forms hydrogen bonds with water molecules resulting in the solubility of such compounds, example are ethanol and glucose will dissolve in water

6. Most organic compounds are inflammable and burn exothermically in a plentiful supply of air to yield carbon (IV) oxide and water

7. Reactions involving organic compounds tend to be much slower than the ionic reaction in inorganic chemistry.
