Duplicate Content: A Problem for Search Engine Optimisation

When search engines encounter duplicate content, they face the dilemma of which version to include or exclude from their indices. This can lead to search engines not knowing which version to rank for relevant queries, potentially diluting the visibility of the original content.

If multiple versions of the same content exist across different URLs, search engines might divide the ranking signals between these duplicates. As a result, none of the versions may rank as well as a single, consolidated piece of content would have.

While not all duplicate content is penalised by search engines, deliberate attempts to manipulate rankings through duplication can lead to penalties. Search engines aim to provide users with unique and valuable content, so they may penalise sites engaging in deceptive practices.

One of the primary criteria for search engine optimization is the originality of the content. Search engine algorithm only favors content that are original. If there are multiple version of the same content, none of the content might rank. Duplicate content is a big no-no. If some portion of content already appear else where it will never rank. If you want to rank, avoid publishing duplicate content. If your primary traffic comes from social sites and email marketing, and not search engine you can go ahead with duplicate content.
