Here are some tips on starting off as an entrepreneur. They will not only make your first experience with entrepreneurship more enjoyable, they will give you a head start on becoming a successful business owner.
1) Think of all the reasons this is your dream career.
2) Prepare for the long haul. Take it one day at a time and build up from there – you can't be afraid to take risks when staying in one place for so long, no matter how small, is what you want to do for work.
3) Learn about your industry and people in it and find out what companies are going well around you now (and those that are flailing). Talk to the people that are doing well and ask them how they did what they did to succeed.
4) Determine where you want your business to be in 5 years, or maybe even sooner. If you want to start a company that lasts longer than 3-5 years, then you're going to have to figure out how you want it to look after that time period is over.
5) Choose a style of business you like (product-based or service-based) and research others that fit your criteria. Remember, the best entrepreneurs are entrepreneurs first and business owners second.
