The state of the eyes Your central vision is harmed by macular degeneration, sometimes called age-related macular degeneration or AMD. It damages the macula, the central area of your retina where you can see fine details. It is the main reason why persons over 60 lose their vision.
There is a chance of both wet and dry macular degeneration. When abnormal blood vessels grow under the macula and start to leak blood and fluid, wet AMD begins to develop. A macula problem results in loss of central vision. Dry AMD causes the macula to shrink, progressively reducing the clarity of your central vision. Between 70% and 90% of patients have dry AMD, which outnumbers moist AMD.
