The intrauterine device, or IUD, is a tiny T-shaped implant placed in the womb. It's used to prevent pregnancy and also to treat certain conditions. The possibility of acne in women using IUDs has long been recognised. Yet why?

A study conducted by researchers at the University of California at San Francisco found that one in six women who have an IUD experience acne. Acne is brought on by hormonal changes in your body and skin; it is not a sickness that you may get. The researchers believe that the hormonal changes could be what causes some women to get acne when they have an IUD.

Acne is characterized by blackheads and whiteheads on the face, back and chest area (or wherever your skin gets oily). It may also include pimples, cysts and pustules on other areas of your body besides your face and chest. Some people with acne experience redness or irritation in their skin rather than just bumps or pimples. If you suffer from acne, you must discuss the best possible treatments with your doctor..
