Twitter is a free blog-like service where you can write short messages, publish them and share them with others around the world who may have an interest in it. People are interested in publishing messages in this format called microblogging.
The basic idea was that you would write briefly about what you were doing at the moment of writing. It would bridge the gap between the more stilted mail and official blogs that require a little more substantial content per post.
