If you want something and you don't have it, then it's a want. But if you need something and don't have it, then it's a need. You can't change your needs, but you can change your wants. If you're trying to lose weight and you're on a diet, then that's a want (or at least an aspiration). If someone offers you some chocolate cake or ice cream, then that's a need.
If someone offers you some money to buy yourself whatever it is that you want, then that's an opportunity for self-improvement (or at least for self-enhancement). It might be in your best interest to accept the offer, even if what they're offering is not really what you want; but if it is what you really want, then there is no reason why accepting their offer would be in your best interest; so accepting their offer would not be in your best interest.
Wants are things you want to have, but don't necessarily need or actually want to use. Needs are things that are necessary for your survival, like food and water. You can usually tell whether something is a want or a need by looking at the price tag on it. If it's expensive, it's probably a want. If it's not too expensive, it's probably a need.
To save money in general, try to notice when you're spending money on wants instead of needs. This will help you avoid unnecessary purchases and waste money on unnecessary items that won't make you happy in the long run.
