Shares/Stock Stock Market Definition all you need to know

The stock market is a collection of markets where stocks (pieces of ownership in businesses) are traded between investors. It usually refers to the exchanges where stocks and other securities are bought and sold. The stock market can be used to measure the performance of a whole economy, or particular sectors of it.

Stock markets exist so that businesses can raise money by selling shares to investors, and investors can buy and sell shares in those businesses. When a business wants to raise money by selling shares, it will usually do so through an initial public offering (IPO). After an IPO, shares can be bought and sold on stock exchanges.

There are many different stock exchanges around the world, and the most well-known ones are the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and the Nasdaq. The stock market can be a volatile place, and prices can go up and down a lot in a short space of time.
