The subject of importation and exportation is a very interesting one. one that one of us are shying away from even with the enormous benefits it offers. I so much believe one thing that is responsible for this is ignorance, as most people feel it is exclusive to a set of people or that it requires so much fund. What you said is true no doubt. Its really sad when I see farmers store their some of these exportable products for a long time while waiting for buyers. And in the process, some of these products gets spoilt or lose value. Only if the farmers knew that there is high demand for these products abroad, at the end of the day, they eventually sell them at a loss.
Our farmers need to be enlightened about how to make more money from their products not only in the local market, but most importantly, at the international level.
And as you rightly put, it's not as easy as it would seem. But if the farmers could partner with agro allied industries and cooperative societies and also the government, it would be alot easier for them as they would be taught about all the intricacies of this lucrative trade. I have seen how the bananas here are exported. Right after harvesting the fruits are submerged in a liquid for "curing" so it will last longer in the shelf. It would be sent by ship. The attendant said that they earn 3 times more when they export compared to the revenue they earn when they sell in the local market.
