In order to make money, it is standard practice in Japan to first make some money by selling some of the unused items in the house.
In addition to using the money to buy and sell new merchandise, it is also very popular to buy items that are likely to be worth more than the normal selling price and then resell them with added value after the value has increased. In Japan, this is called "Sedori".
