If you're looking for a gift for your friend, coworker, or family member, but you don't have anything nice to give them, how about doing something that will make them smile? Offering your time instead of a gift can be a great way to show someone how much they mean to you. If you don't have enough money for a gift card, or even if you do, it's always better to spend your time with someone rather than spending money on something that won't be enjoyed as much.
In general, people are more likely to take the time off from work if they know that doing so will make them happier than spending their time on something else would. A study published in Social Psychological and Personality Science found that people who were assigned to spend time at home with their families were happier than those who spent time at work on a project unrelated to their family life.
If you're trying to figure out how much your friends or relatives value your time, ask them how often they'd like help doing something or if there's anything else you can do for them without taking up too much of their time. This is especially useful if you know that one person has been helpful in the past without any compensation but has recently started asking for money in exchange for their services (or maybe even just started charging more).
