Must a business have an online marketing presence before it can thrive?

No doubt about it, promoting a business online is a good way to boost sales and get more customers. That is why we see all kinds of businesses and their goods or services being advetized online. It could be on the various social media platforms like WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, telegram, etcetera. Businesses can also be promoted on online forums. This helps create awareness about what the business is all about.
However, not all businesses must have an online presence before they run well. Take the rural areas for example, chances are most business owners don't even know how to operate the internet. You actually can't expect the mothers and grandmothers selling foodstuffs in a stall to go online to market their business do you? Yet they still have customers flocking into their shops daily. So while it is good to promote ones business online, it doesn't mean this that do not are doomed to fail.

I agree with you but having an online presence helps to create awareness.

For a business to strive without an online presence depends on some factors like location. If it is in the city, it may thrive because people must always walk past it.
Another factor is how good is your business, if it's a restaurant for example and the food is really good, people will patronize more frequently therefore it will thrive.

It is not compulsory but it is mandatory and it also depends on the kind of business you do or the kind of product you, like a petty trader that sells food stuff or other does not need to advertise online.
But if you are into wholesales then you will need an online presence. Also people into skill related business like, hair making, baring, arts, tailoring etc also needs an online presence.

In this new era, where everything revolves around technology it is a prerequisite that every business has an online presence. It might not be on direct sales and check out for instant purchases online but the customer can have access to pre-order,customer care front desk and enquiry and feedback section set up online. Not forgetting some marketing or advertising should also be set up online. This will help your business to reach out to as many people as possible. Also to note is that Online advertising of a business is way much cheaper as compared to traditional advertising. So Online marketing is inevitable as of the current new age.

I truly agree with you that not all businesses needs an online market presence just like the example you go for rural areas. But if they want to increase their reach they need to have an online presence. As with the internet they can popularize themselves and increase their sales in other areas too. Plus it is not necessary to use online marketing for it, they can also use offline marketing techniques like promotional giveaways as a tool to market themselves but an online presence is a must-have in today's digital world.

Having an online awareness is the best interest of every business. We are in the digital age, if all your attention is focused on offline advertisement you won't get as much sales as you would if it is coupled with online presence. For example an outfit seller will make definitely make his sales if he has a ship, but that sales can be doubled if he has an online store too. Besides, one can operate an online store without a physical one, just selling from his home and still make enough sales. So online business is very important in every business.

This depends on what the owner of the business wants, if the business is a home business that is owned by a non ambitious person who's target is just to sell his/her business to people within the locality only then there's no need for online presence. But if the owner wants the business to go beyond the locality with increased sales and patronage, then the business must have online presence to achieve that.

In my community there are two women selling cooked foods, their shops are in close proximity to each other thereby making them to share customers. While the first woman was working hard trying to use every trick she can find to lure more customers to her shop, the second woman decided to work smart.

The second woman created a business page online and start displaying her business online with good packaging, soon people that are in neighboring communities started placing orders for delivering to their destination, and she equally started getting contracts for outdoor catering and her business boomed. So having online presence depends on what the business owner wants.

With the way the world is going these days it is actually very difficult for you to scale a business that does not have an online presence. A lot of people use when digital media or the other and as such some business will not even be considered legit if they do not have a presence online.
