Why grow lavender?

Lavender is an unpretentious plant, perfect for the environmental conditions - it tolerates very well low temperatures and drought and is not vulnerable to disease.
Up to 3 harvests can be obtained in one year.
Lavender production can be used in many ways: dried plants, green plants, arrangements and decorations for events, but the most popular form is the essential oil.
The competition is still quite low, and from a single hectare you can get a profit of at least 5,000 euros / year.
Lavender can be exploited for a long time, the cuttings having a lifespan of up to 15 years.

How do you start a lavender business?

Lavender is a perfect crop for small plots. Most growers in our country have started this lavender business with land of less than half a hectare, but you can start with an area of a few hundred square meters for testing. At one hectare, the investment for the purchase of lavender cuttings is at least 700 - 1,000 euros, depending on the chosen variety.

It does not have high soil requirements, but it needs to be grown in well-drained soil, as excess moisture can be harmful to the plant.

Planting takes place between March and April or in October, before the risk of frost. It is recommended to plant in autumn, which allows the development of cuttings and fixing the root over the winter.

As a care technique, lavender needs only the pruning of the flower stalks, especially during the flowering period, but also the provision of a necessary amount of water, preferably by drip. The cost for the irrigation system for one hectare reaches about 1,500 euros.

Harvesting takes place during the summer, more precisely in June. A second harvest can be obtained in autumn, if the plant has precipitation and favorable weather. Lavender can be sold fresh, for oil production, or dried. The plant dries in special spaces, in the dark, requiring about 900 cubic meters for a one-hectare crop.

The initial investment can be recovered from the second year, but the real profit is obtained from the third year after planting.

In recent years, lavender cultivation has grown, being one of the most profitable businesses. Due to the increase in the number of plantations, growers are constantly coming up with new ideas and showing creativity and ingenuity in terms of capitalizing on lavender crops. If you really want to, you can become a successful entrepreneur by starting a lavender business!
