THORChain or RUNE is a decentralized liquidity protocol that allows users to swap tokens without the intervention of third parties and the use of wrapped tokens. It provides liquidity while still allowing consumers full custody of their possessions.

RUNE Applications
RUNE is the THORChain native token. It serves as the foundation token for exchanging for other supported assets. Here are several examples:

Security. To ensure security, node operators must bond twice as many RUNE as they donated to a pool. The RUNE bonds are retained as collateral to ensure that node operators act in the best interests of the network.
Governance. Token holders can choose which asset or chain to prioritize. They accomplish this by voting with their money. For example, the pool with the largest percentage of committed RUNE will be prioritized.
Asset for settlement. All assets within a pool have a 50% pairing with RUNE, regardless of how they are withdrawn or placed.
Incentivization. Block rewards and swap fees are paid to liquidity providers and node operators in RUNE according to a predefined emission schedule. RUNE can also be used to pay for gas.
A Tor, RUNE's smallest unit, contains eight decimal places. RUNE strives to achieve a deterministic, predictable value. RUNE's market value should be at least three times that of all non-RUNE assets combined in the ecosystem's liquidity pools by design.

How does THORChain function?

THORChain is a layer 1 application built on Cosmos and Tendermint that secures its asset vault via Threshold Signature Schemes (TSS). Two-thirds majority consensus is required for funds to enter or depart the primary TSS vault, which is given by the layered Byzantine Fault Tolerance (BFT) consensus mechanism offered by Tendermint and TSS.

Furthermore, liquidity pools allow for asset transactions on THORChain. These pools are protected by a network of node operators and are made up of assets deposited by liquidity providers. Liquidity providers deposit their assets in liquidity pools to create return, which is made up of swap fees and system rewards. Anyone can boost liquidity without involving a third party. In reality, because only the first depositor may withdraw funds from the pool, THORChain is also non-custodial. If the suggested asset pools are system tokens, liquidity providers may also offer them.

By talking with one another, independent node operators (THORNodes) contribute to the building of the swapping network. In exchange for securing the network, they will be compensated for each swap accomplished. Before becoming a node operator, a user must offer an RUNE bond. These bonds are employed as security to ensure that node operators act in the best interests of the network. The total bonded requires twice the size of the RUNE pooled.

THORChain may use this liquidity pool concept to calculate the value of any asset in any other asset by comparing pool balances. In other words, THORChain acts as a vault manager, tracking deposits and withdrawals and determining asset prices based on pool ratios. Decentralized liquidity is promoted by eliminating centralized intermediaries.
