History of Social Media Marketing: The Most Noteworthy Successes

In the past decade or so, social media marketing has become one of the most popular and effective marketing tools available. And it’s no wonder why – when used correctly, social media marketing can be an incredibly powerful way to reach and engage with potential and current customers.

But what many people don’t realize is that social media marketing is actually quite a new phenomenon. In fact, the first social media marketing campaigns were only launched in the early 2000s.

So, in this thread, we’re going to take a look at the history of social media marketing. We’ll explore some of the most noteworthy and successful social media campaigns of the past, and see what we can learn from them.

One of the earliest and most successful social media marketing campaigns was launched by Sony Ericsson in 2001. The company ran a competition called the “Sony Ericsson Txting Challenge”, which invited people to text in to win a new phone.

The campaign was incredibly successful, receiving over 500,000 entries from all over the world. What’s more, it generated a lot of positive media attention and helped to raise awareness of Sony Ericsson’s phones.

In 2006, Burger King launched a social media marketing campaign called the “Whopper Virgins”. The campaign saw Burger King staff travel to various countries to film people’s reactions as they tried the Whopper burger for the first time.

The videos were then posted online, and the campaign generated a lot of positive attention and publicity for Burger King.

With this little example you can see how social media is very effective when it comes to lead generation and sales.
