Social proof is when people rely on the actions of others in order to make a decision or form an opinion about something. It was originally studied by Leon Festinger, who found that people will often conform to what others are doing or thinking in order to "fit in." This concept has since been used as a marketing tool. By displaying social proof on your website, such as how many people have "liked" your Facebook page, how many people are following you on Instagram, and so on, it makes potential customers feel like they want to be part of the group as well.
