It is really difficult to say which is more effective: email marketing or social media marketing. It all depends on how many followers you have on social media and how many subscribers you have for your email services.

If you have 1k followers on Instagram but have 10K subscribers for your email list, you will certainly become more successful with email marketing compared to social media marketing. In order to become successful on social media, you need to be a good content creator as you can build followers only through interesting and useful content. In order to build an email list, you need to be a good marketer.

The success also depends on what kind of audience (social media followers or email subscribers) you have. If your audience is genuinely interested in your products and services, you will become more successful.

You also need to follow a couple of marketing strategies in order to become successful, for instance, do not spam, do not promote low-value products, etc.

In my experience social media marketing is lot easier than email marketing, however, when it comes to conversion email marketing and social media marketing are almost at the same level. When you promote something on social media you will notice that your link has fewer clicks even when your reach is really large. People do not bother to clicks on the links. Even when you reach 10k people you might not even have 100 people click on your links. Contrarily, if your email list s genuinely built you might have 5-6 percent conversion, which means 5-6 percent people clicked on your links.
