Women's bodies have an amazing capacity to adapt and recover after giving birth. It is important that women take good care of themselves after giving birth to help them heal stronger and faster.
What is normal?
After a woman gives birth, her body needs time to recover. The time it takes to get back to normal will depend on different factors, including:
The type of birth you had (vaginal or caesarean)
How healthy you were before your pregnancy
If this is your first baby or not
The best way for women to care for themselves after giving birth is:
To rest often and eat well
Begin light exercise, such as walking or swimming
Avoid heavy lifting, long periods of standing or sitting and strenuous exercise until you have recovered from your birth
Offer the mother food and drink often. She may not want it, but if she does it could help her feel better and give her energy for healing.
Help the mother bathe if she wants to. This will make her feel much better because it will help cleanse her body from all that it has been through during labor and delivery as well as from all of the sweat that comes with pushing out a human being (or two!).
To recover from a caesarean, you will need at least 6-8 weeks before doing any heavy lifting, long periods of standing or sitting and strenuous exercise.
