So many get cavities. It's just a fact of life. And if you're one of the lucky few who hasn't gotten one yet, you may get one at some point. So when you go to the dentist and they tell you that your molar has a cavity and needs treatment, don't panic! Your dentist will tell you that you need a filling, and that's probably because Mercury Dental Fillings (MDF) are among the safest and most effective fillings available today. Most people who have mercury fillings seem to be just fine. But it is not known for sure whether they are safe or not. Some people are very sensitive to mercury and can have symptoms from mercury fillings such as headaches, muscle and joint pain, trouble sleeping, and problems with their memory and thinking. They may need to have their fillings removed.

Mercury is released into the body in small amounts over time as fillings wear down. Fillings may also release mercury if they are removed or repaired. Because of this, dentists take special steps if they have to remove a filling that contains mercury. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) does not consider mercury dental fillings to be a health risk for most people. But it has some concerns about how much mercury is released from the filling over time, especially when the filling is being repaired or removed.
