Ebola is a contagious disease caused by infection with the Ebola virus. It has a high risk of death, killing between 25% and 90% of those infected, with an average of about 50%. It is one of the world's most virulent diseases.

The disease is caused by infection with Ebola virus, named after the Ebola River Valley in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), where it was first recognized in 1976. The natural reservoir host of Ebola virus remains unknown. However, on the basis of evidence and the nature of similar viruses, researchers believe that the virus is animal-borne and that bats are the most likely reservoir. Four of the five subtypes occur in an animal host native to Africa.

Symptoms begin abruptly within five to 10 days after contracting the virus, with fever, chills, headache, muscle pain and weakness. This is followed by diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pain and unexplained hemorrhage (bleeding or bruising). Symptoms may appear anywhere from two to 21 days after exposure to ebolavirus though eight to 10 days is most common.

later stages of the disease, patients may experience bleeding inside the body or from various parts of the body (such as eyes, ears, nose, or mouth). This can lead to:
Liver dysfunction
Kidney dysfunction
Internal bleeding
Low blood pressure (hypotension)
