Can You Transfer a Domain Instantly?

The process of modifying your domain registration is known as a domain transfer. If your domain meets the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) transfer requirements, which require you to have owned it for at least 60 days, you can transfer it immediately.

What Is the Average Domain Name Transfer Time?

A domain transfer will take anywhere from five to fourteen days. The time it takes is determined by how quickly you meet the criteria and how quickly your current domain name registrar and the new web host approve the transfer.

An Overview of the Domain Transfer Process

1- Choose a different web host and set up an account with the one to which you'd like to move your domain. Here's how to choose the perfect host.

2- Examine your contact details. The registrar will ask for your contact details when you register for a domain so your new web host will notify the administrative contact during the move.

If you're still using your domain-associated account, switch to a general or public email address like Gmail.

3- For the new registrar, update the privacy settings. If you disable domain protection, your current registrar will be able to see your contact details. After that, you must wait for the WHOIS database to update its records with your details.

4- Your name servers should be updated. The traffic from your domain is routed via name servers to the host server.

It's best to update the name servers now if you've already transferred your website to your new host, as you won't be able to make DNS changes when the domain transfer is in progress.

5- Your domain name will be unlocked once you have done so. Many domain registrars can “lock” the domain after you buy it to protect it from unwanted changes or transfers.

6- Unlocking your domain name is simple; some registrars will do it for you, while others will do it for you.

7- Obtain your authorization code by requesting it. The EPP code is the last thing you'll need before starting the domain transfer(or authorization code). This code is usually sent via email by the registrar.

This is usually the most time-consuming move, as receiving your code can take up to five days.

8- Begin the transfer. You're ready to start the transfer once you've obtained your EPP code. You'll be guided through the process by your new web host. Make a payment for the move. It's worth noting that certain web hosts can charge a transfer fee in addition to annual renewal fees when transferring a domain. Any associated fees should be discussed with the web host you're moving to.

9- Cancel your previous domain registrar. Before canceling your previous service, make sure the domain transfer is complete and your new account is up and running.

Why Your Domain Transfer May Be Taking Long

If your domain transfer is taking longer than recommended, it's possible that you've run into some problems, such as:

  • The EPP code has not been obtained by your new web host. The EPP code in your email will take anywhere from five to fourteen days to arrive.

Check your domain's registered email address if you haven't obtained the code yet. If the domain's associated email address appears, you'll need to submit a Change of Registrant request.

Otherwise, search your spam or garbage folders if you've changed your email address.

  • EPP code is invalid. Since the EPP code is case-sensitive, any mistakes should be corrected by copying and pasting the code again, making sure to delete any spaces before or after it.

If it still doesn’t work, the EPP code may have expired, so you will need to request a new one.

  • Domain privacy is enabled. If you’ve already received an EPP code but still experience delays in domain transfer, check whether your domain privacy is disabled.

The registrar can send domain transfer emails to a Privacy Protection mailbox that isn't easily available if your privacy settings haven't been changed.

It can take up to 24 hours for the WHOIS database to be modified after domain privacy is disabled. Only then will the domain transfer email be sent to the new administrator.
