On the first day of a new job, I am expecting more of "getting to know others" than sitting in front of the computer doing a very busy task. However, it appears that the latter is more likely the scenario. The "getting-to-know-others" thing will be done unknowingly upon encountering with other co-workers or managers who might be related to one's work. In office work, those persons that most likely everyone might be encountered are: (a) those persons who give guidance through one's specific work (b) those persons who will hand over tons of works (c) HR representative or IT in charge who will take one's details to register an ID and email account (d) the tea boy (e) the manager or the boss who might give a words of wisdom or simply expand the topic "this is how we work" and (f) some secretaries.

If you are part of a team, you will meet your manager, someone you will work with on a daily basis. This is a good time to ask them questions about your responsibilities and what they expect of you. They will help you settle in and maybe sort out things like computer logins, email access etc.

Once you’re up and running, your line manager will run through some work with you and get you started on something. Don’t be afraid to ask questions at this point so you can familiarise yourself with your duties and how the company does things.

First day of work should be the day to be most punctual at least shows how serious you want to be with your job. Then be friendly with everyone you see around. Avoid any argument on your first day even if you are right. You can let it slide for peace sake.
